How Umless works, what to do when it doesn’t, and how to reach a person.
Getting started
- 1
Open a video
On iPhone and iPad, Choose Video picks from your library and Browse Files opens anything else. On Mac, drop a file on the window or press ⌘O.
- 2
Let it listen
Umless pulls out the audio and runs the detector on your device. A minute of video takes a few seconds, and nothing is uploaded.
- 3
Check the marks
Each filler appears as an amber mark on the timeline and a row in the list. Tap a mark to play from that moment, and untick anything you would rather keep.
- 4
Tune it if you need to
Sensitivity sets how sure the app has to be before it marks something. Trim around each cut takes a little extra either side of each cut, so the breath goes with it.
- 5
Preview the edit
Turn on Preview the cut and the player shows the finished edit rather than the original. What plays is exactly what gets written.
- 6
Export
The file is written at the source’s resolution and frame rate. On iPhone and iPad it saves to Photos automatically; on Mac you choose where it goes.
Questions
Which sounds does it detect?
“Um”, “uh”, “hmm” and a drawn-out filler “and”. It listens to the sound rather than transcribing your words, so no text of your speech is ever produced.
The model is trained on English speech. It often works on other languages, but expect it to find fewer.
Does exporting reduce the quality?
The video is re-encoded — a cut in the middle of a group of frames cannot be made without it — but at the source’s own dimensions, frame rate, rotation and colour, and aimed at the source’s own bit rate. Nothing is rescaled and nothing is letterboxed.
Does it need an internet connection?
Not to do its job. Detection, preview and export all run on your device and work in Airplane Mode.
A connection is used for three things only: buying or restoring Umless Pro through the App Store, an occasional check for a newer version on iPhone and iPad, and a small daily usage count for the detection model. The Privacy Policy describes each one.
Which files can it open?
MP4 and MOV files with H.264, HEVC or ProRes video. The file has to have an audio track — there is nothing to listen to otherwise.
How long does it take?
Detection is quick — a few seconds a minute of video on a recent device. Exporting is the longer half, because the video is re-encoded; 4K takes noticeably longer than 1080p.
It missed one, or flagged something that isn’t a filler.
Move Sensitivity. Catch everything marks more and will include some false alarms; Only obvious ones marks fewer. Every mark can be unticked individually, and changing sensitivity never re-analyses — the result is instant.
Where did my exported video go?
On iPhone and iPad it is saved to Photos, in Recents. On Mac it goes to the folder you chose in the save panel. Your original file is never modified or deleted.
Can I change the language or the theme?
Settings has both. Language offers English and 简体中文, and Appearance offers Light, Dark or Follow System. Both default to your system setting.
Umless Pro and purchases
What does Umless Pro include?
Umless Pro unlocks unlimited video exports. It is available as a weekly, monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase. The price in your currency is shown before you confirm.
Does my purchase work on all my devices?
Yes. Umless is a single App Store app for iPhone, iPad and Mac, so Umless Pro works on every device signed in to the same Apple ID.
How do I cancel or change a subscription?
Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then Account Settings › Subscriptions › Manage.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.
I bought Umless Pro, but it isn’t unlocked.
Make sure the device is signed in with the Apple ID you bought it with, then use Restore Purchases in Umless’s Settings.
How do I get a refund?
Payments are handled by Apple, and so are refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
If something goes wrong
“This video has no audio track.”
Umless works from sound, so a silent file has nothing for it to do. Check that the clip really carries audio — screen recordings made with the microphone off often do not.
Nothing was detected
Either the recording is genuinely clean, or the speech is in a language the model handles less well. Set Sensitivity to Catch everything and look again.
It can’t save to Photos
Umless asks for add-only access the first time. If it was declined, turn it back on in Settings › Apps › Umless › Photos and choose Add Photos Only. The share button next to it can send the file anywhere in the meantime.
The export failed
Check there is free space for a second copy of the video, then try again. If a particular file fails every time, send it to us if you can — that is the fastest way to get it fixed.
Contact
Questions, bugs and feature requests all go to the same place, and a person reads them. For a problem with a specific video, it helps to include your device, its system version, and how the clip was recorded.
